court- to be surrounded by one's disciples or admirers, giving advice, exchanging gossip, receiving compliments(almost like a clique)
victorian Age- the 1800's, a time when Queen Victoria ruled over England
renaissance-the activity, spirit, or time of the great revival of art, literature, and learning in Europe beginning in the 14th century and extending to the 17th century, marking the transition from the medieval to the modernworld
stunner-Pre-Raphaelite slang for a good looking woman
convent-a society or association of monks, friars, or nuns: now usually use for a society of nuns
idealistic-pertaining to the cherishing or pursuit of high or noble principles, purposes, goals, etc.
spiritualist-a person who is concerned with or insists on the spiritual side of things
sexism-discrimination on the basis of sex, especially the oppression of women by men
automatic writing-writing performed without apparent intent or conscious control, especially to achieve spontaneity or uncensored expression, these writings usually occur in a seance
martyr-a person who is put to death or endures great suffering on behalf of any belief, principle, or cause; a person who willingly suffers death rather than renounce his or her religion
retrospective-directed to the past; contemplative of past situations, events, etc.
nudes- art involving people that are naked/in the nude
abstract art- a genre of art that breaks away from the traditional, realistic style of art, focussing more on color and distorted shapes
sculpture- the art of carving, modeling, welding, or otherwise producing figurative or abstract works of art in three dimensions
portrait- a likeness of a person; either drawn, painted or photographed
abstract expressionism- where the artist uses color and form to show his/her feelings
inspiration- something that influences the brain and convinces it to take action or do something creative
ambition- the desire/urge to get work done or to achieve a goal
personality- the characteristices/traits that make a person unique
fan art- art created by fans of a certain subject (movie, person, book, etc.)
cubism- an art form that distorts a realistic object with geometric shapes and shading
mannerism- an art form from the Renaissance that is complex with long, muscular figures and intricate poses
baroque art- similar to mannerism but less complex in form with more realistic and emotional effects
photography- a form of art where one sets up models and uses a machine to take the picture instead of drawing, painting, or sculpting it
camera- a machine that takes a picture by exposing film to light
fauvism- the use of bright colors and simplified forms in an artwork
mural- the act of putting an artwork on a large wall(usually by paint)
mosaic- an artwork which one pieces together pieces of glass (or tile) to make a picture
neoclassical- a form of art that is unemotional and detatched that brings back the classical forms of ancient Greece and Rome
romanticism- as a reataliation against neoclassical, this artform is highly emotional, but still uses beautiful images to display this emotion
medium- the specific material or type of art an artist works with (ex: clay, paint, glass, photography)
movement- a popular art style of a particular time (ex:neoclassical, fauvism, baroque, etc.)
theme- subject matter of the artwork
kinetic art- art with movable parts (by hand, motor, or some other means)
comic- a series of drawings portraying a story (with words)
illustration- a work of art used in a book to help a person visualize what is happening or what something in it looks like
creativity- the ability to create something unique and original
woodturner- a person who, like a woodcutter, cuts wood, but does so with a special machine called a lathe
